If You Had to Drop One Beauty Treatment, Which Should It Be? A Cost-Per-Impact Ranking
Budgets are tight, prices are up, and at some point most people look at their standing appointments and think: something has to go. The question is which.
Most "save money on beauty" advice is useless here because it treats every treatment as equally droppable. They aren't. Some deliver an enormous visible difference for very little money; others cost four figures a year for something that, honestly, mostly you notice. Here's an attempt at an honest ranking — from a platform that would rather you kept booking all of them.
Best value per pound: keep these
Lash and brow tinting. Around £4 a week of wear, and for anyone blonde, red-haired or light-browed it's genuinely transformative — the difference between visible lashes and invisible ones. Nothing else on the beauty menu changes a face this much for £20. Our tinting guide covers who it works dramatically for and who it barely touches.
A good haircut, at a sensible frequency. Shape does more work than colour, and long hair genuinely holds up at 10–12 weeks. £150–£300 a year for the thing people actually notice first is the strongest value on this list.
Brow shaping. £15–£25, lasts weeks, frames your whole face. Consistently underrated.
Middle: worth it if it solves a specific problem
BIAB or builder gel, if your nails are weak or you bite them. You're paying for structural protection while nails grow — a functional outcome, not just colour. If your nails are already strong, this is decorative and belongs lower down.
Facials, if you have a specific concern (congestion, texture, pigmentation) and go consistently. As a monthly relaxation ritual they're a luxury, and that's fine — just be honest about which one you're buying.
Balayage over highlights. Not a drop, a swap: higher per visit, roughly half the annual cost, because of how it grows out.
Anti-wrinkle injections. Expensive at £900–£1,200 a year, but the effect lasts months rather than weeks and there's no in-between period where you look "grown out". Whether it's worth it is personal — but it isn't poor value in the way frequent low-impact treatments can be.
The expensive habits worth genuinely reconsidering
Lash extensions. The single biggest recurring cost in mainstream beauty at £775–£1,800 a year, and the one with the shortest gap between appointments. If you're cutting one thing, this is usually the maths. A lash lift costs roughly a third and, for anyone with decent natural lash length, delivers most of the effect.
Weekly spray tans. £1,000–£1,800 a year, fading meaningfully within a week. Dropping to fortnightly or seasonal halves it with almost no loss.
Fortnightly gel manicures. £780–£1,200 annually. Stretching to three weeks, or switching to BIAB's longer cycle, saves hundreds without giving anything up.
Nail art on every set. Full hand-painted designs at £25–£50 a time, on nails you'll change in three weeks. Accent nails deliver most of the look for a fraction — see our nail art pricing guide.
The honest caveat about "value"
All of the above ranks visible impact per pound, which is only one way to judge. Some treatments are worth it because of how they make you feel walking out, or because that appointment is the only hour in your month that belongs entirely to you. That's a real return; it's just not one a spreadsheet captures.
So the more useful question than "what should I drop" is probably: which of these would I actually miss? Most people, asked honestly, can name one standing appointment they keep out of habit rather than pleasure. That's the one.
Three ways to cut cost without cutting treatments
- Swap to the longer cycle. Gel to BIAB, highlights to balayage, extensions to a lift. Fewer appointments, not cheaper ones.
- Book a junior stylist for maintenance. Qualified, supervised, 20–40% cheaper, better availability. Save senior pricing for restyles and corrections.
- Ask about course pricing for anything repeating — waxing especially. Typically 15–20% off, rarely advertised.

The bottom line
Tinting, a good cut and brow shaping are the best value in beauty and shouldn't be first out. Lash extensions, weekly tans and fortnightly gels are where the money quietly goes. And before dropping anything, check whether the longer-cycle version of the same treatment gets you the saving without the sacrifice — it usually does.
